September Swarm
Yesterday morning, my dog and I took a walk around an old farm near our house that now is a wildlife management area. At the end of our walk, the sun came out from behind a cloud and illuminated a massive swarm of little insects. There seemed to be millions of them, filling the air […]
Under the Bridge on the Cathance River
This photo is my entry into the Lifestyle category of of Down East‘s 10th Reader’s Photo Contest. (Yesterday, I posted my entry into the Landscape category.) Contest voting opened to the public this week. I made this image earlier this summer while kayaking down the Cathance River in Bowdoinham, heading toward Merrymeeting Bay. The boat launch ...
Sunrise Over Second Roach Pond
Voting opened this week for Down East‘s 10th Reader’s Photo Contest. I entered one image in each of the contest’s three categories: Landscape, Wildlife, and Lifestyle. This photo, my entry into the Landscape category, was from my recent solo gravel biking trip in Maine’s 100 Mile Wilderness. (More about that in an ...
“Seaweed Abstraction I” included in new juried exhibit
I am excited to announce that my photo “Seaweed Abstraction I” has been included in “Abstract,” a juried exhibit that opened at River Arts in Damariscotta, Maine this week. This photo, which has been the cover image for my website, is part of a series I began last fall. It is an honor to be […]
Seaweed Abstraction in Spire: The Maine Journal of Conservation and Sustainability
I am thrilled to announce that one of my abstract seaweed images has been included in the 2024 issue of Spire: The Maine Journal of Conservation and Sustainability, which was released today. This image was one of a series that I started making in Harpswell in late 2023. I included some other images from the […]
Photographing climate change in Midcoast Maine
Over the winter, I started photographing the effects of climate change here in Midcoast Maine. A lot of these images seem most appropriate in black-and-white, which helps express the gravitas of this moment in our region and on our planet. The light and clouds in this image remind me of the opening, pre-tornado scenes in […]
Abstract seaweed in Harpswell
I was in Harpswell, Maine yesterday afternoon scoping out potential sites for a new project. Although these images weren’t what I had in mind when I headed out, the high tide and low November sunlight transformed the seaweed along Harpswell’s shoreline into abstract patterns that were just too strange and beautiful not to photograph.
Finding World War II sites around Casco Bay
Last week, I continued working my way around Casco Bay, visiting World War II sites for a current photography project. The forts I have been visiting for this project are layered. Some date back into the 1800s, with structures added and modified over time to meet new defensive needs. Even forts that were active in […]
Foggy Friday shoot on Peaks Island
I have been working on a project about the physical remnants of World War II and the Cold War around Casco Bay. This topic first piqued my interest a few years ago when a friend took me on a hike at the then-new Kate Furbish Preserve, which is on the former Naval Air Base in Brunswick. […]
